Bannack Best

Title: Time Out Chair Date/Time: 5/25/11 6:00 PM Location: Bannack Ghost Town
F-stop & Shutter Speed: 4 & 1/50 Camera: Nikon D40
I took three shots with different exposures and combined them using Dynamic Photo to create a HDR image. I used the eye catching option from the tone map. I had my camera on a tripod to align the pictures easily.

Title: AAA Date/Time: 5/25/11 1:00 PM Location: Bannack Ghost Town
F-stop & Shutter Speed: 5.6 & 1/2500 Camera: Nikon D40
For this picture I had Arianne pose with my suitcase by the wagon as if it had just broken. I put the camera on aperture priority. In postproduction I used Dynamic Photo to get better color and light.

Title: Stove Date/Time: 5/25/11 4:00 PM Location: Bannack Ghost Town
F-stop & Shutter Speed: 3.8 & 1/160 Camera: Nikon D40
For this picture I had the camera with a large aperture and wide focal length. In PhotoShop I desaturated the image and adjusted the levels. In Camera Raw I added some blacks.

Title: Neighborhood Date/Time: 5/25/11 12:00 PM Location: Bannack Ghost Town
F-stop & Shutter Speed: 25 & 1/250 Camera: Nikon D40
I took three shots with different exposures and combined them using Dynamic Photo to create a HDR image. I used the eye catching option from the tone map. I had my camera on a tripod to align the pictures easily.

Title: From the Pulpit Date/Time: 5/25/11 4:00 PM Location: Bannack Ghost Town
F-stop & Shutter Speed: 3.5 & 1/320 Camera: Nikon D40
I wanted to make this picture as a person would see it while giving a speech or something so I focused on the seats rather than the pulpit while using a large aperture. In PhotoShop I desaturated the image and then added a sepia photo filter. In Camera Raw I added an adjustment brush to darken the exposure around the edges.

Title: Baby Room Date/Time: 5/25/11 4:00 PM Location: Bannack Ghost Town
F-stop & Shutter Speed: 5.6 & 1/25 Camera: Nikon D40
I did a lot of editing to this picture in PhotoShop. First I replaced the color of the baby carriage with the pink from the bedskirt. I also adjusted the levels and vibrance. Next I blended in a picture of some old scratched paint to give it an older look. Lastly I lowered the saturation on the image but masked out the effect on everything but the wall.

Title: Dead Drunk Date/Time: 5/25/11 4:00 PM Location: Bannack Ghost Town
F-stop & Shutter Speed: 25 & 3 Camera: Nikon D40
I used a tripod and long shutter speed to get this image. I had Scott pretend to be drunk and then move out of the way really fast.

Title: Red House Date/Time: 5/25/11 4:00 PM Location: Bannack Ghost Town
F-stop & Shutter Speed: 5.6 & 1/125 Camera: Nikon D40
Red is my favorite color so I thought this house was pretty sweet so I took this picture and got the window on the third. Next I took the picture into Dynamic Photo and chose the ultra-contrast choice from the tone map options because it brought out the red nicely and that is what I liked in the picture.

Dynamic Photo HDR Single Shot

Title: Panorama Date/Time: 5/25/11 4:00 PM Location: Bannack Ghost Town
F-stop & Shutter Speed: 9 & 1/320 Camera: Nikon D40

I took seven pictures across this creek behind the ghost town and used the automated photo merge in PhotoShop to combine them. I took the single shot panorama into Dynamic Photo and used the eye catching choice from the tone map options. Afterwards I took the picture into Camera Raw and used an adjustment brush to paint the sky more blue.

Dynamic Photo HDR Three Shots

Title: Light Date/Time: 5/25/11 2:00 PM Location: Bannack Ghost Town
F-stop & Shutter Speed: 5.6 & 1/2 Camera: Nikon D40

Title: Normal Date/Time: 5/25/11 2:00 PM Location: Bannack Ghost Town
F-stop & Shutter Speed: 5.6 & 1/20 Camera: Nikon D40

Title: Dark Date/Time: 5/25/11 2:00 PM Location: Bannack Ghost Town
F-stop & Shutter Speed: 5.6 & 1/30 Camera: Nikon D40

I took three picture of this image at different exposures using a tripod. I put the pictures into Dynamic Photo and lined them up to match. Next I used the tone map to see different ways the picture could turn out. I chose the eye catching option and saved it. Next I took the HDR picture into Camera Raw and used an adjustment brush to lighten the dress and necklace in the suitcase.

Macro Abstract

Title: Pens Date/Time: 5/25/11 4:00 PM Location: Bannack Ghost Town
F-stop & Shutter Speed: 5.6 & 1/250 Camera: Nikon D40

Title: Names Date/Time: 5/25/11 4:00 PM Location: Bannack Ghost Town
F-stop & Shutter Speed: 5.6 & 1/160 Camera: Nikon D40

I used the Macro setting on my camera to take picture of the pens and sign in book at the Masonic temple. In PhotoShop I merged the layers with low opacity and then masked out the writing over the pens so they would stand out well.

Reverse Shallow Depth of Field

Title: Wheel Date/Time: 5/25/11 4:00 PM Location: Bannack Ghost Town
F-stop & Shutter Speed: 5.6 & 1/160 Camera: Nikon D40

Title: Arm Date/Time: 5/25/11 4:00 PM Location: Bannack Ghost Town
F-stop & Shutter Speed: 5.6 & 1/160 Camera: Nikon D40

I love old sewing machines so I chose to photograph this one with two different focuses. To get the reverse depth of field I just used a large aperture and spot metering on my camera to focus first on the wheel of the sewing machine and then on the arm. I didn't edit either photo.

Blurred and Frozen Action

Title: Twilight Zone Date/Time: 5/25/11 2:00 PM Location: Bannack Ghost Town
F-stop & Shutter Speed: 25 & 4 Camera: Nikon D40

To get the blurred ghosty effect I set my camera on shutter priority for a long 4 second opening and Torrey ran into the adjacent room. We had to go in a dark hallway of the hotel so the picture wouldn't be over exposed.

Title: Splash Date/Time: 5/25/11 5:00 PM Location: Bannack Ghost Town
F-stop & Shutter Speed: 8 & 1/1250 Camera: Nikon D40

To freeze the water splashing I set my camera on shutter priority as fast as it could go with still getting enough light to see the image. Then I threw the rock into the water several times until I got the right shot. I cropped the photo in PhotoShop.

Bannack Portraits

Title: Self Portrait Date/Time: 5/25/11 4:00 PM Location: Bannack Ghost Town
F-stop & Shutter Speed: 5.6 & 1/400 Camera: Nikon D40

For this picture I set my camera on a tripod and used the self-timer setting. The camera was on aperture priority and I set it as low as it would go while zoomed in to 55mm. In post production I cleaned up my blemishes and airbrushed my face and adjusted the levels.

Title: Bartender Date/Time: 5/25/11 1:00 PM Location: Bannack Ghost Town
F-stop & Shutter Speed: 5.6 & 1/25 Camera: Nikon D40

For this shot I used a fill flash at a really low setting. The windows in the saloon around him added some nice side light on his face as well. I had the camera on aperture priority. I cropped the photo to get someone's arm out of the picture.

Title: Pretty in Pink Date/Time: 5/25/11 1:00 PM Location: Bannack Ghost Town
F-stop & Shutter Speed: 5.6 & 1/80 Camera: Nikon D40

For this shot I angled the camera to get the mirror and her face. I had a large aperture and tried to focus on her face. In post production I airbrushed her face and darkened her lips. I also lightened her eyes and added a highlight above her eyeshadow.

Title: Reflections Date/Time: 5/25/11 2:00 PM Location: Bannack Ghost Town
F-stop & Shutter Speed: 5.6 & 1/125 Camera: Nikon D40

For this picture I focused on her reflection from behind. The light is from the window in the saloon. IN post production I saturated her pretty green earring to stand out more. I did the same to her lips.

Title: Malvina Date/Time: 5/25/11 12:00 PM Location: Bannack Ghost Town
F-stop & Shutter Speed: 25 & 1/15 Camera: Nikon D40

I had Malvina sit on a bench in some house facing the window to get some nice light on her face. In post production I airbrushed her face and darkened her lips to match her shirt.

Portrait Edits

Title: Temple Marriage Date/Time: 5/17/11 5:00 PM Location: Rexburg
F-stop & Shutter Speed: 5.6 & 1/500 Camera: Nikon D40

The first thing I did was to use the spot healing tool to get ride of their moles and large freckles. Then I used the brush tool at a low opacity and flow to airbrush their skin. Next I selected their teeth and put feather on the selection and painted over them with 10% opacity of white paint.

Title: Walking Date/Time: 5/18/11 6:00 PM Location: Rexburg
F-stop & Shutter Speed: 6.3 & 1/160 Camera: Nikon D40

I used the color replace tool in PhotoShop to change the color of the suitcase to match the color of her shirt that is sticking out under her jacket. I also added burned edges around the picture and lowered the vibrance.

Title: Falls Date/Time: 5/17/11 5:00 PM Location: Rexburg
F-stop & Shutter Speed: 5.3 & 1/160 Camera: Nikon D40

Title: Smirk Date/Time: 5/17/11 5:00 PM Location: Rexburg
F-stop & Shutter Speed: 5.6 & 1/250 Camera: Nikon D40

When I took this picture it was over exposed so I used the color match tool in PhotoShop to bring back the color from another picture where Ben was making a face. It made it a lot easier than just adjusting the levels and trying to bring back the color myself.

Portraits

Title: Stephanie and Blur Date/Time: 5/18/11 6:00 PM Location: Rexburg
F-stop & Shutter Speed: 5.6 & 1/80 Camera: Nikon D40

For this picture I zoomed in to 55mm and put my aperture as big as it could go because I wanted to get the trees behind her blurry. I also kept her far away from them to get a better effect. I tried to put her eyes as the main focus of the picture.

Title: Stephanie Look Date/Time: 5/18/11 6:00 PM Location: Rexburg
F-stop & Shutter Speed: 5.6 & 1/125 Camera: Nikon D40

For this picture I used aperture priority with the largest I could while zoomed in to 55mm to get good proportions. I tried to balance her and the corner behind her on the thirds to get good composition.

Title: Waiting Date/Time: 5/18/11 6:00 PM Location: Rexburg
F-stop & Shutter Speed: 5.6 & 1/250 Camera: Nikon D40

For the full body shot I still wanted to keep my subject close so I had her sit down so I could get more of her in the frame. I told her to pretend to wait for a train and look down the tracks.

Title: Kissy Face Date/Time: 5/17/11 4:00 PM Location: Rexburg
F-stop & Shutter Speed: 5.6 & 1/500 Camera: Nikon D40

I took my friend Janessa's engagement pictures and in between poses they were just enjoying being together and I caught it on camera. In post production I adjusted the layers and airbrushed their skin a little.

Title: Smooch Date/Time: 5/17/11 4:00 PM Location: Rexburg
F-stop & Shutter Speed: 4 & 1/100 Camera: Nikon D40

Since they were being so cute and lovey I had them pose that way in front of this old door. I used a reflector to add the light right where they come together. In post production I cropped the image and adjusted the levels.

Title: Mowing Date/Time: 5/18/11 7:00 PM Location: Rexburg
F-stop & Shutter Speed: 5.6 & 1/80 Camera: Nikon D40

This guy was mowing the grass around where I was taking pictures and he was happy to let me photograph him too. I used aperture priority with a large aperture but since he was so close to the house it didn't get very blurred so I added just a little bit in PhotoShop.

Panorama

Title:  Panoramic Date/Time: 5/10/11 8:00 PM Location: Rexburg
F-stop & Shutter Speed: 9 & 1/125 Camera: Nikon D40

I took several overlapping pictures of this seen and used the automated photomerge in PhotoShop to blend them together. Once they were blended I adjusted the levels to make the foreground darker. I masked out the effect on the top and added an adjustment layer to lighten the levels on the top and masked out the effect in the foreground. Next I brought the image into Camera Raw for some more edits. I used an adjustment brush to add more color in the sky. I painted in blue, pink and yellow to make it more exciting. Lastly I used another adjustment brush to bring out the color of the grass in the foreground.

Camera Raw

Title: Stop Date/Time: 5/10/11 8:00 PM Location: Rexburg
F-stop & Shutter Speed: 8 & 1/60 Camera: Nikon D40

I opened this image in Camera Raw and used an adjustment brush to paint the sky blue. I also adjusted the levels to add more dark contrast. I used another adjustment brush along the side of the building where the sun hit to add a little more exposure and make it a bit brighter.
Title: Temple and Flowers Date/Time: 5/14/11 1:00 PM Location: Salt Lake
F-stop & Shutter Speed: 10 & 1/250 Camera: Nikon D40

The first thing I did to this picture was I added some black and contrast in Camera Raw. Next I used an adjustment brush around the edges of the picture with high saturation and low exposure. I added another adjustment brush on the front of the temple that had high saturation and high exposure. I did this so that the low exposure on the outside and high exposure in the middle would draw your focus to the temple.
